Concrete Polishing in Bacolod City
Polished concrete for STI university in Bacolod City
Bacolod City, the capital of Negros Occidental, is a highly industrialized city in the Philippines. DARIV had the opportunity to build the concrete floor of the STI West Negros University in Bacolod. This premier university is a testament to the city’s progress in the education of its residents.
After our successful polished concrete project for STI’s new building in its Ortigas-Cainta branch, STI asked DARIV to provide the same level of quality for their Bacolod campus. Their choice of polished concrete was perfect because it is arguably the best flooring option for a university where the floor experiences high foot traffic daily. Here are some pics from our project at STI Bacolod City.
A Brief History of Bacolod City
Our experience with performing concrete polishing service with STI Bacolod was memorable. Bacolod is known as the “City of Smiles” and the “Sugar Bowl of the Philippines” because of its rich sugarcane industry. Founded in 1770 on a stonehill area called “bakolod” (meaning stonehill in Ilonggo), the town was initially settled inland to escape pirate raids. Eventually, the town moved toward the shoreline for safety and accessibility.
Bacolod played a pivotal role in the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. In 1898, Generals Aniceto Lacson and Juan Araneta successfully captured the city from Spanish forces, and established Bacolod as the capital of the short-lived Cantonal Republic of Negros. American forces occupied the city in 1899, and the people of Bacolod subsequently adapted to American colonial governance until the Americans left on July 4, 1946.
Urbanization in Bacolod City
The city of Bacolod officially became a chartered city in 1938. This marked a significant milestone in its urban and administrative development. Early on, Bacolod’s economy has been historically anchored by sugarcane plantations, which dominate its landscape and its commerce.
The wealth of the hacienderos (sugar barons) transformed Bacolod into a prosperous hub of trade and culture in Visayas. But when our team was in Bacolod, we noticed the rice of other commercial ventures that are no longer agricultural in nature.
Over the past five years, Bacolod has experienced notable commercialization and urban growth. Since the islands of Negros and Siquijor were removed from Region 7 and made into the newest administrative region in the Philippines, the people of Bacolod became more competitive and driven to make their city one of the most livable urban centers in the Visayas.
Bacolod City has received multiple awards already. This includes being ranked among the Top 8 Most Competitive Cities in the Philippines (2018) and the Most Competitive City in the Visayas region. It has also been recognized for its livability and e-government initiatives. The presence of universities like STI, AMA Computer College, ABE International Business College, and the National University display plenty of improvements in business empowerment and data-driven governance in Bacolod City.
