Polished Concrete Floors for School Buildings

Polished concrete floors are the best available options for school buildings in the Philippines. These floors can withstand the daily pressure of foot traffic coming from students, teachers, staff, and visitors. DARIV has completed several concrete polishing projects for schools such as STI University, Bacolod;  STI College, Cainta-Ortigas; STI College, Fairview, Quezon City; I-Link College, Midsayap; and Bukidnon State University, Bukidnon.

TL;DR

  1. Polished concrete floors are the ideal flooring solution for school buildings because of their high durability, cost-efficiency, ease of maintenance, and environmental friendliness
  2. Polished concrete floors can withstand heavy daily foot traffic without cracking
  3. The reflective sheen  of polished concrete reduces the need for artificial lighting
  4. Polished concrete floors are easy to clean using basic materials
  5. Before polishing, the concrete floor must pass the hardness test and should be flat
  6. DARIV has completed high quality projects for schools such as I-Link College, Bukidnon State University, and STI College
  7. Polished concrete floors meet both durability and aesthetic needs of educational facilities
  8. Polished concrete floors provide a practical and attractive flooring option for schools nationwide

School buildings benefit from polished concrete floors

Polished concrete floors are perfect for school buildings because of the high-volume of foot traffic they experience every day. This article will highlight actual projects done by DARIV for school buildings, educational institutions, and universities to explain how polished concrete floors are an excellent choice for these institutions.

Among traditional flooring materials used in school buildings, polished concrete stands out because this type of flooring is:

  • Highly durable
  • Cost-efficient
  • Easy to maintain, and
  • Environment friendly

Here are case studies of school building projects we completed nationwide to show how polished concrete floors can benefit your school, institution, and university.

POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS FOR SCHOOL BUILDING

STI University, Fairview

STI University reached out to DARIV again to provide polished concrete for another campus building:  STI Fairview branch. Similar to the Cainta and Bacolod branches, STI wanted a semi-gloss polished concrete floor to give their indoor spaces a  professional look. At the same time, they wanted polished concrete so that their floor is durable and easy to maintain. Here are some images from this ongoing project.

STI University, Bacolod

In line with STI University’s vision of bringing high-quality education across the country, STI’s Bacolod branch also reached out to DARIV to get their concrete floors polished. Just like the Cainta branch, which DARIV completed with high-quality results, STI Bacolod also asked to a semi-gloss polished concrete floor for their canteen and other rooms. Here are some pictures of DARIV’s Visayas team doing the final burnishing process on STI Bacolod’s polished concrete floor.

Polished concrete floors were perfect for this university. STI hosts hundreds of students and teachers daily. This kind of daily foot traffic could easily wear out ordinary flooring materials. Polished concrete, however, is proven to be the most durable and most cost-effective flooring solution for locations with high daily-foot traffic. Here are additional pictures from STI Bacolod, showing DARIV’s finished polished concrete floor project and some shots of the university’s actual usage of their superb and sophisticated concrete floor.

POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS FOR SCHOOL BUILDING

STI College, Cainta-Rizal

STI is one of the largest educational institutions in the Philippines. Formerly known as Systems Technology Institute, STI started as a computer training center in August 21,1983, with only two campuses in Buendia, Makati, and España, Manila. As of 2025, STI already has 63 campuses across the Philippines.

DARIV’s polished concrete service with STI started in 2024. STI’s Cainta-Branch asked DARIV to polish around 5,000 sq. meters of concrete with a semi-gloss sheen. The institution wanted their new campus to be a model educational facility equipped with features like LED monitors in classrooms, advanced laboratories for kitchens, computers, and a stylish student lounge.

Thus, STI asked DARIV for a concrete floor that is durable, shiny, and easy-to-maintain. Since their floor will be used daily by hundreds of students, teachers, staff, and other stakeholders, polished concrete was their best option for their new building. Here are some pictures from STI College, Ortigas-Cainta.

POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS FOR SCHOOL BUILDING

I-Link College, Midsayap, Cotabato

I-Link college needed a flooring solution that is highly durable, beautiful, and easy to maintain. Thus, they chose polished concrete floor for their new school building because it could withstand heavy foot traffic coming from students, teachers, parents, and school staff daily without cracking. Moreover, they chose polished concrete flooring because they wanted the a glossy flooring without having to wax and polish their floors and hallways regularly.  The other benefits of polished concrete for school buildings include:

  1. A polished concrete floor reduces the need for more artificial lights. The floor’s sheen itself bounces both the artificial and natural lights entering rooms and hallways.
  2. A polished concrete floor provides more ease in cleaning and maintaining their floors. Polished concrete is easy to maintain using basic cleaning materials.

Prerequisite for polished concrete floors: Hardness

Before we polish any concrete floor, we always check if the floor itself is hard enough to go through the concrete polishing process. The concrete slabs of the new school building of I-Link were already strong and hard. Based on readings from our rebound hammers, the compressive strength of their floor registered between 30 to 40 mpa (megapascals). For perspective, the concrete foundation of a typical ground-level house is at 25 mpa. However, concrete floors ready for concrete polishing should be between 32 to 40 mpa. Thus, concrete under 32 mpa is too soft and would break under the pressure of polished concrete equipment.

The good thing with i-Link College is their slab is well-engineered and already close to the standard mpa required for concrete floors before they are polished. A well-placed concrete slab is beneficial for school owners because once they decide to polish the concrete, there is no need for them to spend on major flooring repairs.

Prerequisite for polished concrete floors: Flat surface

Since the floor was hard already, all we needed was to ensure the floor is flat. Hence, to achieve a flat surface our team had to grind the concrete floor down to bring the rough and even parts to level. All surfaces, corners, and edges need to be flat before we started grinding.

Hence, our team had to grind the concrete floor down to bring the rough and even parts to level. All surfaces, corners, and edges need to be flat before we can start grinding with 16-grit diamonds. After making the floor flat, we used floor hardeners to densify the concrete and bring it to the standard mpa for concrete floors.

The goal set by i-Link and DARIV was to achieve a semi-gloss polished concrete floor within 3 weeks so the school can use the building when it officially opens. Their school staff needed time to clean and prepare their facilities. DARIV fulfilled this tall order through a customized solution that fit i-Link’s requirements. For three weeks, we successfully grinded and polished i-Link’s concrete floors up to 800-grit to give it the semi-gloss appearance they wanted.

DARIV’s i-Link project was a success. We were able to meet the desired sheen level of the floor within the timetable provided by the client. Here’s a video of how the project looked upon completion.

POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS FOR SCHOOL BUILDING

Bukidnon State University, Malaybalay, Bukidnon

Another educational institution we helped is Bukidnon State University (BSU). Just like i-Link College, BSU’s concrete floor experiences high foot traffic daily due to their number of students, staff, and visitors.

Their university administrator decided to choose polished concrete for their floor for better durability and ease of maintenance. In addition, they understood how polished concrete can give added aesthetics to their indoor premises.

Here are some pictures of what the premises looked like prior to the project’s completion.

We spent several months grinding and polishing their concrete floor to achieve a high-gloss polished concrete finish. Here are pictures of what their floor looked like after our concrete polishing process.
